OMNIPOTENCE

This article concerns both the suggested omnipotence, and omniscience of ‘God’.

First some MK Definitions:

Omnipotent- All powerful, capable of anything. (From the Latin- Omnes (All) Potere (to be able)

Omniscient- All knowing, poessing infinite knowledge. (Omnes- Scire (to know)

Now then, as I’m sure you all know, it is widely acknowledged by Christians that ‘God’ is all powerful and all knowing.

There are a huge number of flaws in this statement. Most of which are fobbed off by Christians by saying that it is impossible for us to comprehend ‘God. While I agree that there are some things beyond human understanding at this time (such as the concept of infinity). I cannot see any possible reason that I cannot gain a firm understanding of certain temporal matters.

Ok, my first problem with ‘God’ being omniscient is as follows:

Before the world was created, God sat alone in the darkness. He had always been there, never being created but ever present. He sits in space for an infinite amount of time. Then he decides one day that he will create the universe.

My main problem with that nice little picture is that it is impossible to consciously decide to carry out an action after an infinite time of deliberation. The only way therefore that ‘God’ could have created the world is if he does things completely at random with no form of intelligence. Therefore he didn’t send Jesus to Earth to die for our sins, he simply did it by accident because he doesn’t know what he is doing. Therefore making ‘God’ not omniscient but more likely not sentient at all.

Also, if ‘God’ is omniscient, surely he could tell instantly how everyone in the world was feeling, what their problems are etc. Therefore it would be extremely tiresome for him to have to sit there and listen to people telling him what he already knows (prayer).

Apparently ‘God’ moves in mysterious ways. This is a nice little excuse for Christians when bad things happen. ‘God’ created the world, and had to kill everyone with a big flood because he was upset with what they had become. Surely being omniscient, he would have known what they would trun out like? But even though he knew that he would have to commit global genocide, he carried on with his actions. Maybe he likes mass murder? Who am I or any mere mortal to say??

If he is indeed omnipotent, then surely resting on the 7th day was merely a lazy waste of time. He could have created the world in a second without breaking into a sweat. But he decided to have a day (or a million zillion years depending on what a ‘God day’ is) off. Is sloth not one of the 7 deadly sins? Ah well, im sure he deserved the rest, seeing as he made such a great world eh?

How can I not marvel at the splendour of creation? With all the trees, flowers, birds and bees? Well mainly because in nature there are also things such as anthrax, ring worm, amoebic disentry and other such undesirable natural assets.
